A letter from our Founder, David Michell

I know a lot of company founders are a bit old, crusty and boring, but I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself and tell you a little bit about what we do here at ioMerino and, just as importantly, why and how we do it. And I promise I’ll try and be as brief and not-boring as possible. I promise.

My family have been involved in the Australian wool industry for over 140 years, so you could definitely say wool is in my blood. During that time, we’ve learned pretty much everything there is to know about the best places to source it, how to process it, comb it, spin it and turn it into some of the finest fabrics on Earth.

As someone who loves to be active myself, I love getting out there in nature and trekking, running ultra races, going skiing and riding my bike. What I don’t like, is being cold or wearing poor quality merino baselayers. I don’t like it when those baselayers look like something grandma would wear, either. (With no offence to anyone’s grandma.) So back in 2004 I decided to do something about it.

My mission was to make the best quality, most comfortable, high-performance merino active wear imaginable. Plus, something that looked as good as it performed. I didn’t want to make just another merino garment, I wanted something genuinely different. Genuinely better. Our unique MicroMerino fabric was the result of all that hard work. It’s what really makes our garments better than the rest. And I don’t just guarantee these fabrics, I wear them.

Today, we use the most ethical production processes possible. We refuse to deal with the high volume, low-quality suppliers that most of our competitors do and instead control the entire process by knitting our own fabrics right here in Australia.

I’m so confident you’re going to love our gear, I’ve even introduced the Absolute Love Guarantee. Love it as much as I do, or return it. No questions asked. It’s as simple as that.

One last thing: as a relatively small player on the global stage, I’m not too proud to ask for your help, either. If you like what we do here at ioMerino, I’d consider it a personal favour if you told your adventure loving friends about us as well. Mention it to them, email them, share something about us on social media... whatever works for you. We’re certainly not aiming to be the biggest company on the planet, but the more people who know about us and what we do, the better. For them, and for us.

Thanks again for taking the time to find out more about ioMerino, and please feel free to contact me personally or my team at any time if there’s anything else you’d like to know or if there’s anything else we can do to help.
