As a company that makes some of the best, warmest, softest, most comfortable Merino fabrics in the world, of course we’re going to tell you how awesome we think Merino is. And after one touch of our unique, superfine Australian MicroMerino® fabrics we’re pretty confident you’ll agree and never go back to stinky synthetics. (Or second-best Merino fabrics either!) But who would've thought Merino would embark on a mission into the universe.
Our customers often say our clothing is ‘out of this world’, as they are ridiculously warm and comfortable. But now we hear Merino will literally be going on an out of this world mission and into that huge black area filled with bright stars we like to call ‘space’.
Space exploration giant NASA will be boldly taking Merino where no man has gone before, making it part of their astronauts’ uniforms. The astronauts won’t be wearing ioMerino this time around, which is a shame for them as they’d be super comfortable in our MicroMerino® fabrics, but at least they’ll be enjoying many of the natural benefits Merino has to offer.
As the ioMerino Crew and extended family have done for generations, NASA is now sourcing Merino wool for its natural protective powers and ultimate comfort. Amongst other things, apparently NASA were super impressed with the ‘flame resistant’ qualities, where Merino flame resistant in temperatures up to 600 degrees, keeping their astronauts safe when they get a little hot under the collar. It probably won’t help them if they land on the sun, but 600 degrees is not a bad start. This particular feature is likely to be less relevant to most of you, unless you have a space trip planned any time soon, but it’s still a great reminder that Merino really is a pretty remarkable fabric and there’s nothing else quite like it on Earth. Or, presumably off Earth either.
Merino’s anti-static properties are also important for astronauts as loosefibress can cause filtration issues on board a spacecraft and, some serious problems for Houston. We’re guessing the antimicrobial, anti-stink features probably come in pretty handy as well when you’re stuck on a spaceship for an extended period of time! Given our love affair with Merino, we’re not at all surprised to hear its taking off with NASA, so it seems it’s one small step for man, one heck of a leap for Merino!
While Merino is an amazing natural fibre, not all Merino fabrics are created equal. At ioMerino, we make our own fabrics, using only the best quality fibres, and to very specific specifications that make the most of the natural benefits of Merino. All of them are 'Merino rich’. No cheap blends passed off as Merino. No cheaper scratchy fibres or synthetic substitutes to save money. No unethical production. And each fabric is made for a specific purpose. So if you see something with a small amount of elastase or nylon added, you can be sure it absolutely needs to be there to enhance the natural stretch and durability.
It took every bit of our 140 years of experience in the wool industry to perfect our fabrics, but we think you’ll agree the end result was more than worth the effort.
