What to Wear When You Run in the Cold

Here at io, we really love running. Most of the team here are runners. We do fun runs. parkruns. Trail runs. Half marathons. Marathons. Ultras. Stage races. You name it, we’ve run it… or would like to.

But you know what we don’t really like? The cold. Lucky for us, we don’t have to worry about it because our io takes care of that. Our natural, lightweight, breathable layers are absolutely perfect for cold weather running.

If you want to be super comfortable next time you run in the cold, here’s what the experts on our io Run Team suggest:

1. Choose the perfect leggings with next level comfort.

If you like running in leggings, you’ll love ours. They’re not as colourful as some, and not quite as compressiony as full compression leggings, but the revolutionary fabric will give you a great combo of thermal + compression which = next level comfort.

2. Designed for mountains, loved by trail runners.

It really depends on exactly how cold it’s gonna be, but most runners go for the Altitude contact fit tops. They’re snug fitting, so they’re not for everyone and you may want to size up. But they’re soft and warm and even though they were designed as a base layer for on mountain, runners love ‘em. And if you don’t want the snug fit, you can always go for the Ultra range which is a sporty fit, or Universal range which is a regular fit. And whichever range you choose, you’ll get the natural thermo-regulating performance of premium Aussie merino.

3. No one likes a cold head. We’ve got it covered.

Neck/Head warmer. If you don’t have one of these in your running kit, you don’t know what you’re missing. Super versatile, wear it however you want to keep your neck, ears, head warm. They’re pretty amazing and way better than regular cotton or synthetic ones.

4. Keep your hands warm too!

Gloves. These lightweight merino gloves are just what you need to keep your pinkies warm. Not much else we can say about these. They’re gloves and they’re made out of one of our premium merino fabrics.

5. Go with an io zip for extra versatility.

Insiders tip: Everyone’s different, but we can highly recommend our zip tops for running too. The higher collar gives you extra warmth if and when you need it, but sleeves up, zip down keeps you from overheating if you warm up.

And look, at the end of the day, we know runners love the big, popular running brands. And we’re just a smaller cult Aussie brand. So we know we’re not for everyone. But if you’re the kind of person who likes to run your own race and blaze your own trails, gives us a go. Our stuff comes with a money back guarantee which we offer because we know almost no one ever wants to part with their io once they’re tried it. So what have you got to lose?
